A Weekend Trip to the
White Mountains and the
Ancient Bristlecone Forest
We set off to the White Mountains on Friday the 24th of September. Nick and Lisa Warner and one
of Nick's colleagues, Clement Ruef joined us at the campground around 8:00 PM. We had a
beautiful star filled night with bats in a wild eating frenzy and shooting stars all night.
Saturday morning, after a breakfast of Mary Ann's zucchini nut bread, panyota, coffee and tea,
we headed off to see the
Ancient Bristlecone Forest. These are the oldest living things in the
world. Some have been dated to over 4800 years.
Along the way we discovered that there was a
bike ride taking place; 200 miles over several
passes of more than 8000 feet and a climb to Schulman Grove at 10,000 feet.
The day was spent at the
Schulman Grove with all but Mary Ann taking the 4 mile Methuselah walk
to see the very oldest trees.
Mary Ann stayed near the visitors center to sketch and do some water colors.
Afternoon found us headed up the dirt road for 12 miles to
Patriarch Grove where the largest
Bristlecone is located. Late in the afternoon we headed back to camp to a dinner of chicken
tikka masala prepared by Nick.
Sunday morning we broke camp and headed down to the Owens Valley and a quick trip through the
Alabama Hills, a view of Mt. Whitney(14,496) and then up to Horse Shoe Meadows at 10,000 feet
for a short hike and a view of
Mt. Langley (14,042).
We left to head down to 395 and the road home. We were treated to a
great view of Owens Lake.
Dinner was at Indian Wells restaurant and then home.
