In
Lone Pine California
October found us stealing away for seven wonderful days in the Owens
Valley. Our base of operations was at
Boulder Creek RV Park. It is located
just south of
Lone Pine and has a beautiful view of both the Sierras and the
Inyo mountain ranges and of the
Owens Lake remnant. We drove up on Friday
arriving mid afternoon. An early dinner and early to bed (we read a
Campion
mystery to each other first) ended the first day.
Saturday was a day for walking around, early morning pictures and getting
a flat fixed on the Jeep. Saturday night we had dinner with friends Bob and
Darla in Bishop. Darla was our geology teacher for classes in the caldera of
Mammoth Mountain and Death Valley. Bob is the director of the water system
for Inyo county so we got caught up on all the doings on the
Owens River and
Lake restoration project.
      Sunday we took our
first bike ride going about 22 miles around the north
and east side of Owens Lake.
Monday and Tuesday it was windy and cool so we took driving trips. Monday we
went to a place called
Mazourka Canyon and Mazourka Peak. Great day of
driving and looking. Spent so of the day talking to and watching two people
install a new generator for the microwave towers on the mountain. Tuesday we set
of to drive through the
Alabama Hills to the west of Lone Pine. This is an area
of really remarkable rock formations. We had seen a web site that had pictures of
a great many of the
natural arches which are in the area. We found some and did
some photography of them. It was another day of photographing the area. I
added several more panorama shots to the collection.
Wednesday the weather turned fine again so that we were able to get in a
second bike ride. Same area but a little longer this time; 24 miles.
Thursday we had an appointment to have the Bounder serviced in Lone
Pine. That taken care of we headed for home. Safe and sound in La Canada
about 4 PM.
