Marla Gwyn Savant Frenzel
Sulphur, LA
I guess we could write a book about ourselves
since high school. I’ll try to be short.

After graduation, I started right into summer
school at McNeese State University. In June
1958, I had one year behind me and I married
Gordon “Buddy” Frenzel. He is a graduate of
SHS Class of 52. I finished my college
education in Aug. 1960, getting my BA degree
in elementary education. Three weeks later I
was in a classroom in Houston, Tx. with 41
fourth graders. Buddy was working on his
masters at the University of Houston, so we
were in Houston a year. At the end of the
school year I had a call from Calcasieu Parish
wanting me to teach the fourth grade at
Frasch Elementary. My dream had come true.
We were going back to Sulphur and I was
going to teach at Frasch. Buddy and I had our
first child, a daughter, Tara Gwyn, in Feb.
1964. Six years later our son, Garth Edward,
was born April, 1970. I continued to teach and
Buddy became an insurance agent. During the
years our children were growing up, we did a
lot of traveling ( in the summer of course).
They were both very active so we were either
at the ball park, football field, dance recitals or
being active band boosters.

Both sets of our parents continued to live in
Sulphur, so we were all here. My parents had
the Quality Drug Store and Buddy’s parents
had Marjorie’s Flower Shop. Our children were
lucky to have their grandparents close by.

In Oct. 1993, I retired from teaching with 32
years. I really enjoyed my years of teaching
but I was ready to retire. My mom and dad had
both passed away, our daughter had married
in Dec. 1988, and in Dec. 1994 they were going
to make Buddy and I grandparents. So I had
plans ahead of me. We had our first grandson,
Cole Edward Lavergne, born Dec. 21,1994. Our
life changed. We became the silly
grandparents that all of us know so well.
Buddy retired in 1995, and our lives changed once again. Buddy started leading construction and
medical mission teams through our Church, Henning Memorial United Methodist Church. We traveled
to Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador. We have continued to be in El Salvador. We have about 27-36
team members each trip. The Lord has really blessed us.

Our son, Garth married in 1997. We instantly had two more grandchildren that came with his wife. In
1999, our daughter and son-in-law had another grandson for us. William Ray Lavergne was born Aug.
9, 1999.If you thought we were silly with one grandchild, four made us really silly. On Dec. 27, 2002,
George Edward Frenzel came into the world to make our fifth. We are so proud of our four boys and
one girl.

Buddy and I stay very active with our church. When you are retired you can always find something to
do.
