At Mono Lake among
the Tufa towers
Mono Lake-and the Tufa towers. This lake was being
drained by the City of Los Angeles until there was a court
battle to restore some of the water flow. The towers are
calcium carbonate which deposited and formed the towers
when springs came up in the early lake. All were once
under water so you can get some idea of the amount of
water that has been diverted from the lake. The lake level
has fallen about 100 feet in 70 years.

At a place called Fossil Falls. About 10,000 years ago at the end
of the last ice age there was a great lake to the north of this site.
The remains of that lake is today called Owens Lake. Several
times the lake over flowed and spilled out into the valley below.
This is the remains of the falls, it was cut into basalt cliffs and is
a beautiful place to hike and climb.
