RICHARD CLARENCE “DICK” WEBER – BRENDA
AFTER GRADUATION FROM SHS IN 1957 I ATTENDED SLI IN
LAFAYETTE, MAJORING IN AGRI-SCIENCE EDUCATION. I MET MY
COLLEGE SWEETHEART, BRENDA KERNE, IN 1959 WHEN I WAS A
JUNIOR AND SHE WAS A FRESHMAN MAJORING IN HOME ECONOMICS
EDUCATION. SLI HAD A NAME CHANGE TO USL IN THE SUMMER OF
1960 AND I WAS IN THE FIRST UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHWESTERN
LOUISIANA GRADUATION CLASS OF 1961. BRENDA WENT STRAIGHT
THROUGH AND GRADUATED ONE YEAR LATER IN THE SPRING OF
1962. WE WERE MARRIED THREE WEEKS AFTER HER GRADUATION
AT OUR LADY OF WISDOM CHAPEL ON THE USL CAMPUS. THE
CHAPLAIN WHO CELEBRATED OUR WEDDING WAS Fr. JUDE SPEYER.
SOME OF YOU MAY KNOW HIM AS BISHOP JUDE SPEYER, THE FIRST
BISHOP OF THE LAKE CHARLES DIOCESE.

WE STARTED OUR TEACHING CAREERS THREE DAYS AFTER THE
WEDDING AND TAUGHT TOGETHER FOR 33 YEARS, MOST OF IT AT
SOUTH LAFOURCHE HIGH SCHOOL IN LAFOURCHE PARISH. WE WERE
ABLE TO FIT IN CLASSES AND A SABBATICAL LEAVE TO ATTEND LSU
FOR GRADUATE DEGREES. ALSO, WE BOTH TAUGHT ADJUNCT
CLASSES FOR NICHOLLS STATE UNIVERSITY DURING THAT TIME.
UPON RETIREMENTFROM SOUTH LAFOURCHE HIGH SCHOOL IN 1995, I
WENT FULL TIME ADJUNCT PROFESSOR TEACHING ANIMAL SCIENCE
AT NICHOLLS FOR FOUR YEARS. AFTER NICHOLLS I SERVED AS A
STUDENT RECRUITER FOR A PRIVATE VOCATIONAL TECHNICAL
SCHOOL AND RETIRED IN 2003.
WE HAVE BEEN VERY ACTIVE IN OUR PROFESSIONAL
ORGANIZATIONS, HAVING SERVED AS OFFICERS AND COMMITTEE
MEMBERS AT THE LOCAL, STATE AND NATIONAL LEVELS. WE
ACCUMULATED 72 YEARS TOGETHER IN EDUCATION.
WE HAVE ONE SON, LANCE, A VOYAGE COORDINATOR FOR SHELL OIL
AT PORT FOURCHON, HIS WIFE, INGER, AND A BEAUTIFUL GRAND
DAUGHTER, ANGELLE RENE’, WHO IS A JUNIOR HONOR STUDENT AT
SOUTH LAFOURCHE HIGH SCHOOL.
WE LOVE TO TRAVEL AND HAVE ENJOYED THREE CARIBBEAN
CRUISES, ONE ALASKAN CRUISE, A NUMBER OF TRIPS TO COLORADO,
WYOMING, IDAHO, AND MINNESOTA. OUR HIGHLIGHT TRIP WAS
AUSTRALIA AND FIJI IN JUNE 2004.
WE THANK GOD FOR A WONDERFUL LIFE AND CONTINUE TO ENJOY
IT TO THE FULLEST. WE HOPE TO TRAVEL AND VISIT FRIENDS FOR
MANY MORE YEARS.

LAS VEGAS – Dr. Richard Weber of Larose, La. is one of only six
individuals nationwide who received the National Association of
Agricultural Educators (NAAE) Lifetime Achievement Award on
December 3rd at the NAAE annual conference in Las Vegas.
Dr. Weber has been involved in agricultural education and the
National FFA Organization as a member, teacher, advisor, or
supporter since 1953. He taught agriculture for 34 years, with 32
years at South Lafourche High School. During his tenure, South
Lafourche High School had 14 area FFA officers, six state FFA
officers, and multiple Career Development Event (CDE) teams
compete at the state and national level. His chapter was
continually ranked as one of the top ten chapters in Louisiana
between 1967 and 1995.
After retiring from the South Lafourche agriculture program in
1995, Dr. Weber taught animal science at Nicholls State University
for four years.
Outside of the classroom, Dr. Weber devoted his time to
professional organizations. He has been a member of the Louisiana
Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association for 49 years, serving
as an officer and committee member multiple times. Additionally,
Dr. Weber served as the National Association of Agricultural
Educators (NAAE) Region II Vice President from 1973 to 1976 and
as the national president from 1976 to 1977.
Each of the six regional Lifetime Achievement award winners
received a plaque and recognition at the 2010 NAAE convention in
Las Vegas. Ford sponsors the Lifetime Achievement Award as a
special project of the National FFA Foundation. NAAE is the
professional association for agricultural educators. Its mission is
“professionals providing agricultural education for the global
community through visionary leadership, advocacy and service.”
